As Prigov describes, the main hero of the Soviet myth was the милиционер, translated as policeman or militiaman. The policeman was a mediator between heaven and earth, a kind of all-suffering hero: since the heavenly kingdom could not be embodied on earth, he suffered. The policeman was only one of Prigov’s many personas, but he is certainly the best known. Although an overt ironic wink is absent, the poems engage in an ironic relationship to Soviet mythology, with the policeman as its ever-present center.
